M.M.: There Is No God but Man

Agnus Dei

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

It was a Friday before an event that the Orthodox Christians call Christmas. I missed my lunch at the office that day and was very hungry so I decided to have a nice supper in one of my favorite restaurants. The place was almost empty. I ordered a hamburger and a pint of beer. As I was reading a book I've had with me waitress brought me my hamburger and through a half a smile said:”It's Good Friday, shouldn't you be fasting?” It took me a few seconds to realize the nonsense that just came out of her mouth. I've put my book down and said:”Not everyone is Christian in this country. And shouldn't you be at home with your family instead of working in a pub?” She gave me a green smile and rushed off.

No matter what is your choice of religion or spiritual path you will be facing situations like this one many times in your life. And this is just a mild example. If this happened in, let's say, Egypt I might have gotten killed. The poison runs so deep that common people aren't even aware of it in their systems. They will, just like this waitress did, react like a brain washed zombie. I'm sure that she just wanted to be witty and that she had no evil intent. And that makes it even worse. She is completely unaware of the poison of one of the Evil Princes that has corrupted her to the bone.

Liber CCCCXVIII tells us in many places of the corruption that runs in the essence of the Old Religions. These Four have been called “Four Great Princes of the Evil of the World” and are named as Satan, Lucifer, Leviathan and Belial. These four are actually four great religions of the world:

“And Satan is worshipped by men under the name of Jesus; and Lucifer is worshipped by men under the name of Brahma; and Leviathan is worshipped by men under the name of Allah; and Belial is worshipped by men under the name of Buddha.”

Liber CCCCXVIII, 3rd Æthyr

There are probably but a few humans out there that are not influenced by at least one of them. And let me be clear here, one does not need to be a member of any of these religions at any point of their lives to be influenced by the symbolism on a very deep level. You may believe in whatever you want still the false god-images like Jesus or Allah will be influencing you everyday through public media during religious holidays, through various restrictions that some countries impose on their citizens like celebration of one religion's major holiday on a state level and so on and so forth.

I truly believe that there should be no place for religion within state affairs. I also truly believe that our religious practices and belief should not be something that we are to bother other people with. Or as a friend of mine put it long time ago:”I don't mind you believing in ghosts of used napkins as long as you don't bother me with it.” Our reality is a bit different.

Anyone not accepting the illusions of any of the Four Evil Princes has a lot of to put with. Most of the time it's not that harsh as it is for people living in totalitarian religious countries out there. But don't be deceived. There are four evil princes and not a single one is any better than the other. Some will argue that Allah's followers are more aggressive compared to the one's following Jesus or Brahma or Buddha. Are they really? I urge every one of you out there to try and view those religions for what they really are – deception and a limitation of man's freedom.

I call upon my fellow Thelemites to stop and think about things I am about to say. I know that many will not agree. Many will find it offending. I don't really care. If you don't think that Thelema and Old Religions are enemies then perhaps you should re-read our Holy Books.

Each person accepting the Law of Thelema will face at least one of these Four Princes. Whether you choose the path of the A∴A∴ or O.T.O. or you decide to remain unaffiliated and pursue your own spiritual path you will face them in one way or the other. And you must deface them. You must see them for what they really are and throw them away.

I do not call for a new “jihad” that will “rend the face of the Earth” of these Old Religions. No. We should know better. It is a task for each and every one of us to face these false ideas(gods), expose them for what they really are and pass by them. For at the very beginning they are the guardians of the gates of our spiritual advancement.

One may say that I am wrong and that Crowley himself used many deities. Liber 777 is full of them, after all. Yes, that is true. Or so it seems. Careful studying of Liber ABA, Magick without tears and so on will show you that Crowley didn't see any god beyond man. He just used names such as Jupiter, Hades, Jesus Christ or YHVH as symbols, as a representation of sensations, thoughts and ideas. Let us not forget the clear warning of Liber O vel Manus Sagittae:

“In this book it is spoken of the Sephiroth and the Paths; of Spirits and Conjurations; of Gods, Spheres, Planes, and many other things which may or may not exist. It is immaterial whether these exist or not. By doing certain things certain results will follow; students are most earnestly warned against attributing objective reality or philosophic validity to any of them.”

I will no go into nasty business of Crowley quoting in this essay. He has written an enormous amount of material and it's all out there for us to read. Or not. My point is that each and every one of us should rend him or herself of the deceit and illusion created by Four Great Princes of the Evil of the World. A deceit that there is god beyond you and that someone else will “save” you. If you accept the Law of Thelema then you refuse any of the old Paths and certainly see no savior in ideas such as Jesus Christ, Buddha, Allah or Brahma.

It is one thing to use certain Buddhist, Hindu, Christian or Muslim practices and spiritual techniques and a completely different thing to accept the whole slavish system as your way of living. I don't call for throwing away these philosophic systems and their techniques as unworthy. On the contrary. Any student of Crowley's work will find soon enough that we are urged to study all and every system out there. One can't see the faults of a system unless he has understood it.

The fault of all slave religions is nicely summed up in alleged words of Jesus Christ:

“Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”

John 14:6

The reception of the Book of the Law in 1904. marked a major shift in the consciousness of human kind. Not everyone is still aware of it. That doesn't mean that they aren't affected by this shift. Thelemites accept that there is no law beyond “Do what thou wilt”. But do we really live up to that? How many times have we participated in an Old Æon rituals, be that Christmas celebration or any other, just cause we were being polite? I call upon you to rethink this attitude. One may argue that by giving no spiritual significance to any particular Old Æon ritual we aren't feeding it with our energy. I really wish it worked like that. There are so many subtle ways the Four Evils affect us.

And why are these old religions “slave religions” as some Thelemic authors tend to call them? For very simple reason – they are limiting our freedom to be what we really are. Remember, there is no god but man. The divine is inside of each and every one of us. By accepting rules given by Satan, Lucifer, Leviathan and Belial we are crying out loud: “Show me how to live!!” No a very Thelemic attitude, I'd say.

And if we accept that there is no power beyond man, that there is no law beyond “Do what thou wilt” and that all the Old religions are false what does that leave us with? Responsibility. By doing what I've just stated we are taking responsibility from some demiurge and accepting that we are responsible for everything that is happening in our lives. Nasty business, eh?

Let us stop pretending that we're responsible and be responsible for a change. Let us not be afraid to let the Star within shine to it's full potential. And remember, you can no sit on two chairs nor server two masters.

Love is the law, love under will.
